Another great thing we've found to do with Smart lightbulbs is to have them come on automatically, just at the time it's dark enough to need them. The exact time of sunset changes each day, but both Alexa and the Smart Life app are able to create routines that start based on the sunrise or sunset time at your exact location. A good way of working out when to set the time is to notice when you start thinking about turning the lights on, and ask your voice assistant "What time is sunset today?". Then you can work out how many minutes before or after sunset you should set the routine for. We've found that 20 minutes before sunset is just about right for our house, and we have programmed all the living area lights to come on at the same time.
There are a couple of different ways to do this. We've used an Alexa routine, but it is also possible to do using the Smart Life app.
In Alexa, create a new routine, and in the "When" section, you can choose a time based on either sunrise or sunset.
In the Smart Life app, in the "Smart" menu, choose "Automation", and add a new routine with the blue cross. Select "When weather changes", and you can select sunrise or sunset, and programme the routine to start a number of minutes before or after.
Once you've got it set up, you'll find it a pleasant surprise every time the lights come on without you even noticing! Bear in mind that this will happen even if you're not in the house, so it's worth considering adding another routine to turn all the lights off later in the evening too. This also doubles as a useful security tool!
